It's been a cool summer in London weather wise, but there has been a red-hot war being waged by new grocery delivery startups. These new companies are emulating the Deliveroo/Uber Eats food delivery model for takeaway but optimising it exclusively for grocery delivery.
Based on my time in London through this summer, it seems Getir is leading the pack. Having been founded in 2015, they arrive with experience and a war chest full of funds to fight with. It's not yet clear how their tactics used to enter the market will play out once they achieve scale in the UK and whether those economics will translate into happy investors or customers should prices rise again.
One thing is for sure, with this much competition in the grocery delivery space, the customer is winning as incumbents have to up their game with regards to delivery times. Gone are the days of choosing a delivery slot well in advance and receiving your groceries at the most awkward of times in the day.
